Family, fish and fellowship. A mantra that has been deeply rooted in this community long before Horace & Dickie’s Seafood of Glenarden was birthed. 

In 1958, the late Raymond W. Smith Sr., a pioneer in the City of Glenarden, opened Smith’s Barber Shop which quickly became a pillar in the Prince George’s County community.

Ask anybody who grew up in the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s and they’ll be able to name at least one person who got their haircut by Mr. Smith. As one of the first black owned businesses in Glenarden, and the first on Glenarden Pkwy, which is now known as Martin Luther King Jr. Hwy.,  Raymond Smith made sure to be an active presence in his community-- coaching the women's softball team, sponsoring local track teams and boys and girl’s clubs, participating in the Men’s Club at St. Joseph’s Church down the road and being at the forefront of civic life in the county. Several decades later, his daughter Royette Smith became his business partner and opened a beauty salon in the connecting building to the barber shop in 1990. 

That same year, just down the highway in the heart of DC’s H Street Northeast corridor, Richard “Dickie” Shannon and his good friend Horace also began their business, the first Horace and Dickie’s Seafood Carryout. The 12th street establishment became a trademark in the District, and has been known for its dedication to serving the community and well-prepared southern style fried fish for the last 30 years. 

Due to gentrification, the long-standing, original location closed on February 29, 2020. Through the business partnership of Anthony Hagler of H&H Construction, a well-known member of the Glenarden/Landover community with deep family roots in the area, a connection was made with the Shannon family.

Together, Anthony Hagler and Royette Smith have opened Horace & Dickie’s Seafood in Glenarden, Maryland.

Located just a few miles from the DC line, the new location is perfect for those who will miss getting their fish fixings from the city. 

We’re happy to continue the tradition of family and fellowship in Glenarden, serving fresh fried fish with southern style side orders. 

Horace and Dickie’s Seafood is one of the only seafood establishments with a long history of excellent seafood, which has been recognized nationally by sources such as Rachel Ray and Man v. Food on the Travel Channel. Our reputation is echoed by many of our guests who constantly reflect their satisfaction with their many reviews. It is our goal to create an environment that caters to our patrons with a relaxing, friendly and fun place where people will want to come back time and again.
